Kumba celebrates the 61 st anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights

On December 10 Global Conscience Initiative and students of Kumba staged a celebration to mark the 61 st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was held in the Kumba City Council Hall and was attended by about 80 people made up of student groups, teachers and dignitaries of Kumba. The theme of the event this year was the right to education (Article 26 in the UDHR) with Mr Innocent Yuh from Ocean City Radio as MC.
In addition to addresses from the GCI Board chairman, Mr Sako Emmanuel, and a representative for the Divisional Delegate for Secondary Education, the students of human rights clubs performed sketches, read poems, gave papers, including representatives from Bilingual Academy of Arts and Science Kumba, Government Technical High School (Sofati) Kumba, Kumba College of Arts and Science, and AGES College. Refreshments, kindly provided by Les Brasseries du Cameroun, and snacks prepared by the Women's Empowerment Centre were accompanied by a vocal performance from the Kumba-based musicians Westoxc 'n Clo.
After the break, Presbyterian High School and Government Bilingual High School Station Kumba battled it out in a debate on whether boys and girls have equal rights to education in Cameroon, with PHS emerging victorious.
GCI has been working in partnership with the students of ten colleges and high schools around Kumba to develop and support student human rights clubs, and the celebration was a resounding success, displaying the many talents of the human rights clubs. With continuing support from GCI, human rights clubs continue to grow in Kumba, spreading the word on the importance of human rights through the youth to the wider community.
