Global Conscience hosts interns from the University of Buea

During August GCI is hosting five interns from the University of Buea 's Women and Gender Studies department.

They are researching poverty alleviation and conflict in relation to women. During their time at GCI the interns will be trained in research methods and will have the opportunity to apply this knowledge by designing and implementing their own research projects.

One project concentrates on women's access to loans in order to establish small businesses to support themselves and their families.

Another investigates the success of the Kumba widows' associations in alleviating the poverty of women who have lost their husbands.

A third project concerns the treatment of female prisoners and relations between men and women in Kumba prison.

One intern is working on a study of conflict within marriage, looking at the causes of conflict and methods of resolution with a human rights focus.

The interns will share their findings with the public on Human Rights Hour, GCI 's weekly radio programme at 11am on Tuesday.

UB intern Lydia enjoys working at GCI because it is ‘a place to be with people of diverse groups and all walks of life'. She is also pleased to be able to ‘work out the issues of human rights for women and those rights that are being violated.'

Global Conscience hopes that the UB interns will provide valuable research to contribute to our human rights work, while learning new skills which will enhance their studies and their future careers.
