The Media Watch Project

Since 1990 the media in Cameroon has witnessed substantial changes and transformation in many areas - especially in ownership of media organisations and freedom from censorship. The Cameroon media enjoys a healthy and critical position towards government and the conditions for reporting can generally be said to be free and fair. Newspaper organisations spring up on a day-to-day basis, while the audio-visual media is also enjoying greater freedom.

How the media in Cameroon has contributed to innumerable positive changes in the country can not be over emphasized; and considering the power of the media to shape people's political, economic, social and cultural perceptions, there is an increasing need for its monitoring.

This project is conceived against the background of the excesses and challenges of the media, and it is expected to assess the work of the media against a human rights environment and using both local and international media guiding principles.

It is sad indeed to realise that the challenges facing the media in the era of increasing human rights awareness are enormous, and that the lack of skilled staff and poverty has resulted in increasing incidents of poor reporting.
