Dutch International Public Law Student Joins GCI
Global Conscience Initiative is pleased to welcome Marlies Rotshuizen as an intern on the Prisoners' Rights Project. Marlies comes from the Netherlands where she is studying a Master's Degree in International Public Law at the University of Utrecht .
Marlies has a strong interest in human rights which she has pursued internationally. She completed an i nternship at the W orld O rganisation of W orkers (WOW) during the International Congress in Malta in 2008. There she learned a lot about labour rights and how to protect them. She also interned at the WOW in Brussels where she conducted research and prepared documents for the international congress.
Marlies enjoys travelling and immersing herself in new languages and cultures. She is very happy to be visiting Africa for the first time.
Marlies joins the Prisoners' Rights project for three months. During this time she will work with the Prisoners' Rights team to interview prisoners, investigate prison condition, facilitate legal representation for those awaiting trial and run talk-shops to educate the pubic on prisoners' rights. She will also be instrumental in creating the Behind Bars newsletter and is featured in the latest issue, which can be found online at www.prionproject.gcicameroon.org .
Marlies expects that she will learn a lot working at GCI and says “I wanted to undertake an internship where I can apply my skills in a practical context. I am very much looking forward to helping improve human rights for prisoners in Kumba.”
GCI is pleased that the Prisoners' Rights project is progressing with new additions to the team.
