On November 28 th , Global Conscience Initiative will hold a training on leadership for secondary school students in Kumba. The training is part of the GCI Human Rights Club Project. During the first term of the academic year, GCI interns have been working to establish human rights clubs in fifteen schools in Kumba. Ten of these schools now have club activities and the response from students have been very positive.
One goal of the human rights clubs is that in the near future they will be self-sustainable and run by students and teachers together. Currently, teacher coordinators are mainly facilitating the clubs and GCI hopes that the leadership training will enable students to take a more active role in the management of the clubs. Additionally, the training will encourage the students to play a more active role in other aspects of running the clubs such as the planning of club activities.
The training will be an interactive workshop where students will have the opportunity to meet and share their experiences on good leadership and what their role as leaders of the clubs will mean. This is one way of making the clubs lasting and self-sustainable as student leaders will not only be empowered to lead the clubs but will also pass their knowledge on to their fellow students.
GCI will be inviting presidents and secretaries of the human rights clubs to this training as they are the students who will have the biggest role to play in helping the human rights clubs move forward. We look forward to this exciting educational event!
