The Kumba Community Based Human Rights Resource Centre

Kumba is a very strategic economic and political town in Cameroon that continues to experience the highest incidences of human rights abuses across the country. The forms of human rights abuses are varied, but the most prevalent and most disturbing is abuse of power by police, gendarmes and the administration that capitalises on the ignorance of the mostly uneducated farming population. The situation is further exacerbated with the imposition by the Department of Public Prosecution of an FCFA 1000 Fiscal stamps on all complaints of rights violations to the Department, denying victims ready access to justice.

Global Conscience envisages a Human Rights Resource Centre that will train Volunteers to empower civil and community leaders to take a fore role in protection and intervention, through consultative workshops and one-on-one tutoring in the Centre.

The Centre will publish a bi-monthly newsletter on its activities with volunteers, community and civil society leaders and victims of human rights violation. The Centre will also develop and maintain close relation with the media and produce regularly, media alerts, short radio programmes, and urgent action flyers to mobilise the civil society to participate in protection of human rights.

Global Conscience will create similar Centres in other parts of the country
