Genesis of the Global Conscience Initiative

On November 5, 1998, Samba Churchill Chifu, then Kumba correspondent for the National Bi-weekly The Post Newspaper, was tortured to near death by marijuana smoking hoodlums of the notorious "Mukete Gang" right inside the palace of the paramount traditional ruler of the Bafaws, Nfon V.E. Mukete. Nfon Mukete is a Central Committee and politburo member of Cameroon's ruling CPDM party. He is also Board Chairman of the Cameroon Telephone Corporation (CAMTEL)

Doctors said he was polytraumatised and suffered "acute traumatic left orbital haematoma, deep laceration of the right parietal region, traumatic scalp haematoma, traumatic lumbalgia, multiple abrasions of the back, concussion and chest contusion". Doctors declared him incapacitated for sixty (60) days "without considering further complications". Mr. Samba still suffers an eye defect today.

The torture of Samba marked a new beginning in his life and inspired him to create an organisation to defend and promote human dignity. He told himself that he would not sit back and watch society degenerate into a jungle, and since then has been crusading for respect for the inherent dignities of the human person.
